Your Guide to a Summer of Fun in the Marina District

When it comes to summertime in San Francisco, the Marina District has the prime location for enjoying all that the season has to offer. The bay, the bridge, beautiful sites and sounds—you’ll find it all around the streets of the neighborhood!

Whether you’re a long-time local or planning a visit, here’s your quick guide to the can’t-miss summer activities in the Marina.

Browse Chestnut Street

A sheet of pastries.

The best days always start off with a hearty breakfast, and Chestnut Street is full of options. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, check out the pastries and coffee at Chestnut Street Coffee Roastery or Le Marais Bakery. For a meal made for a savory palate, try the fare at Home Plate or Squat & Gobble Cafe. Don’t forget to swing back by for dinner—you’re not going to want to miss the flavors at Delrosa and Mamanoko!

Once you’ve filled up on food, be sure to stop by a few of the locally owned stores along Chestnut Street, like Marine Layer, Books Inc., and Jack’s San Francisco.

Have a Beach Day

A beach in San Francisco.

While the water is a little chilly for swimming, Crissy Field East Beach is a prime spot for water sports like kitesurfing—in fact, it’s known as one of the best beaches for kite surfing in the world! In addition to kite surfing, there’s usually tons of regular kite flying along the shore, as well as walkers, bikers, and runners.

We think the beach is the perfect spot for a summer picnic, and you’ll even find a few park benches if you don’t want to get sand in your sandwiches!

Browse Fine Arts

The Palace of Fine Arts.

The Palace of Fine Arts is internationally iconic, bringing in visitors from all over to take in its dramatic rotunda, stunning colonnades, and immaculately landscaped grounds—and it finds its home right here in the Marina District!

Summer is the perfect season to roam the grounds, exploring the sparkling lagoons and Greco-Roman design details—and snagging a few pictures for Instagram, of course.

Discover Local History

Gardens.

End your day with a sunset stroll around Fort Mason, an old army base from over 100 years ago, and one of the main U.S. ports during World War II’s Pacific campaign. Today, the fort has been transformed into a mix of parks, gardens, and green space, but many of the historic structures remain.

Within Fort Mason, you’ll also find major attractions like the Great Meadow Park, Museo Italo Americano, Cowell Theatre, Young Performers Theatre, and the Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture.
