3 Reasons You Can’t Miss the Haight-Ashbury Street Fair

The famed “summer of love” never quite ended in this vibrant and energetic San Francisco district. What originally began as a way to bring the community together after economic downturn in the late 1960s has transformed into one of the most beloved street fairs in California. Beginning in 1978, every June Haight-Ashbury hosts a street fair to promote their ethos of “Peace, Love, and Happiness”

Below are the top 3 reasons you need to put this fair on your to-do list this summer.

1. One of a Kind Vendors

Artisans frequently give live demonstrations of their creative processes, so collectors will love being able to take an original piece forged right in front of their eyes home. The event also features jugglers and magicians, so there’s no shortage of entertainment!

Venture further into the event and you’ll discover a “children’s alley” that has booths designed for children to participate.  This section has fun arts and crafts tables for creating jewelry, drawing pictures, and making tie dye masterpieces to take home.

2. Live Music

The Haight-Ashbury Street Fair is perhaps best known for its live music selections. As you soak in the sights, it’s not uncommon to see the crowd literally dancing in the street. With two different music stages on each end of the fair it’s easy to get caught up in the groove.

Past featured performers have included Jefferson Airplane, the Tubes, and Metallica. Apart from the headline performers, enjoy a selection of local music with a battle of the bands starting at 11am, showcasing local talent.
